Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter and overall lovely spirit Sarah McLachlan shared a few moments with us to chat about her new album “Wonderland” and offer us a personal look into her fondness for the holidays.
Creative Allies: Wonderland is your second Christmas album, coming ten years after Wintersong. What inspired you to do a Christmas album now? Can you tell us about it.
Sarah McLachlan: Over the years I’ve had a lot of people come up to me and say that Wintersong is a record they play every year and it’s become part of their families tradition. I really love that and thought it was time for a new collection of holiday songs. Holiday classics have been done so many times and ways, I wanted to choose songs that I could lend something different to. I had a chance to work with the Montreal based quartet Half Moon Run, who played on five tracks. They are great musicians and brought their own unique voice to the songs. We also decided early on to have some string arrangements and we enlisted orchestral arranger Brian Byrne who worked with the world famous Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra on 4 songs, transforming them into something magical.
Creative Allies: We are so excited that you are guest curating Creative Allies’ Ugly Christmas Sweater contest. What’s most important to you about the holidays and what are some of your family’s traditions?
Sarah McLachlan: For me, most importantly, it’s about the time spent with friends and family. Every year my friends and I and all the kids go to the Christmas Train in Vancouver and, while we’re waiting for our train, we sing Christmas Carols and eventually have everyone in the lineups singing with us. It’s so much fun and is such a great feeling of community.
Creative Allies: What can we look for next from Sarah McLachlan?
Sarah McLachlan: Well I’m definitely going to put out another record. I have a few songs in the works and plan on writing and recording a new album next year.
