As you’ve probably heard by now Solo: A Star Wars Story was released on June 1, 2018. While the main headline has been its disappointment at the box office, I still think there is plenty to be excited about for the future of Star Wars.
I did enjoy (and recommend) Solo, however, a crazy cameo at the end of the film had me wanting more. Here is what that cameo means and a list of the future Star Wars projects that are lined up.
Surprise Appearance (Don’t worry there are no spoilers ahead)
At the end of the film there was a surprise appearance that really raised some eyebrows. This appearance was important for two reasons.
First it tells us that this character will be playing a big role in future movies. There is no way that a character of this magnitude only comes along to make a quick cameo in the movie. With multiple future projects lined up, it will be interesting to see how they integrate this character into the Star Wars Universe.
Second, it acknowledges a storyline that takes place in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The Clone Wars is an animated series appearing on Cartoon Network before Disney purchased Lucasfilm. This is the first time this has happened in a Star Wars movie, and it sounds like we could be seeing this much more frequently in the future.
Star Wars Future Projects
As I alluded to earlier Disney has multiple Star Wars projects lined up well past the next few years. You didn’t think they bought Lucasfilm for $4 billion just to complete the original six episodes did you? They were very strategic with this acquisition and we are now beginning to see the scope they envision. Here is what we know so far:
Disney hasn’t officially announced a Boba Fett movie, but they essentially confirmed it by tapping Logan director James Mangold to direct. Expect a release date in 2020. Some fans are discouraged because there was a hope the next independent film would be about Obi-Wan Kenobi. We might still see Kenobi in any number of their future projects, so don’t give up hope yet!
New Star Wars Trilogy
Disney also confirmed that Rian Johnson, the writer/director of The Last Jedi, will get his own Star Wars trilogy. It’s expected to take place in a corner of the galaxy we’ve never seen before.
A final future confirmation is a TV series created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, producers-writers of Game of Thrones. This new show will function less as a TV show and more of a series of short movies. The show will most likely appear on Disney’s streaming service when it is launched.
I hope Disney does a job with Star Wars at the same level as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If the history of their company is any indicator of their future, then I think they’ll be just fine. While Solo underperformed, I do not think that is a problem because it was a good gut check for Disney. They’ve been unstoppable as of late and Solo proved that they can underperform. I don’t think they’ll make a mistake like that again.
